Further Details: The Nova Scotian Institute of Science is excited to invite undergraduate and graduate students conducting research across all scientific disciplines in Nova Scotia to apply to be part of our 2024 Nova Scotia Student Research Symposium. This symposium will highlight the breadth of scientific research being done in Nova Scotia with eight 3-minute lightning talks selected from submitted abstracts. We welcome presentations from a diversity of fields and stages of project completion!
More about the NSIS Public Lecture Series: The NSIS hosts a free public lecture at 7:30 pm on the first Monday of every month (with exceptions for holidays), from October through to May. In 2023-2024 these talks will be presented in a hybrid format and can be viewed in-person at Saint Mary’s University or on Zoom. Lectures from previous years are recorded and can be viewed on the NSIS YouTube channel.
The Student Research Symposium: We are looking for students to present short 3-minute talks on scientific research across all disciplines. These talks will be part of our public lecture series, so should be aimed at a general audience. Students selected will also get a chance to participate in a Q & A session (~10 minutes), whereby members of the public and the NSIS community will have a chance to ask questions to the presenters. All selected participants will receive a free 1-year membership to the NSIS. Additionally, two awards with $100 cash prizes will be given for: (1) Best Talk, awarded by a committee of judges from the NSIS council, and (2) Crowd Favourite, as voted on by the audience members. Students should be enrolled in a Nova Scotian post-secondary university or community college or be conducting research that is based in Nova Scotia at the time of abstract submission.
To apply, submit an abstract and accompanying information via the following link by January 22, 2024: Apply Now!
Selection criteria: We will select approximately 8 students, ensuring a diversity of fields of study, research locations, and researcher backgrounds are represented. Applicants will be selected based upon: (i) the predicted interest of their research with the Nova Scotian public, (ii) the clarity of the submitted abstract, and (iii) their potential as a science communicator. Results of applications will be sent out by February 5, 2024.
