Biologist who became a pioneer in electron microscopy at the Rockefeller Institute in New York. Obtained the first useful high-resolution pictures of intact cells of higher organisms. Published over 150 papers and a book on ultrastructure. Elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 1964, and received the Passano Foundation Award and the Gairdner Foundation Award in the same year.
