Foster was Professor of Physics at McGill University from 1924 to 1964, and Director of the Radiation Laboratory at that University from 1947 to 1960. The Laboratory was named after Dr. Foster after he retired. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1929, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1935. The Franklin Institute awarded him the Levy Medal in 1930, and the Royal Society of Canada named him as winner of the H.M. Tory Medal in 1946. Dr. Foster was also awarded the Medal of Freedom by the United States Government in 1947, and the Medal of the Canadian Association of Physicists in 1958. Honorary degrees were awarded him by: Acadia (D.Sc., 1934); McMaster (D.Sc., 1951); Dalhousie (LL.D., 1960); and McGill (D.Sc., 1960).
