Son of Sir William Dawson and like him, a geologist. Also a botanist, on the North American Boundary Commission, and co-author (1884) of the first comprehensive work on Canadian physiography. Numerous honours, including charter membership in the Royal Society of Canada, membership and presidency of the Royal Society of London. Dawson City, Yukon named after him. National Historic Person of Canada 1937.
